R&D / Engineering Services and

Defence Products Development

Amtech Aeronautical Limited provides engineering services in the defence systems and military engineering areas.  The Amtech Medicine Hat operations are in close proximity to the Suffield Experimental Proving Ground (EPG) which is operated by the Defence Research and Development Canada Suffield (DRDC Suffield) as a site for field trials in support of defence R&D in chemical and biological defence and in military engineering.

Amtech regularly provides engineering and technical services to DRDC Suffield in support of a variety of test activities at the Explosive Physics Centre, the Urban Test Centre and other sites.

In the course of this work, Amtech has been contracted to design, prototype and commission a number of test facilities including the small (horizontal) explosive pendulum and a large scale test facility.  Other Amtech DRDC Suffield projects include upgrading the Data Acquisition Centre at the Explosive Physics Centre, the development of a C4 Tamper Device for the preparation of experimental charges, the development of a towed target configuration for the Lockheed Electra aircraft, engineering and technical services to the integration and commissioning of an Explosive Casting Facility, and completion of an engineering feasibility study for a Chemical Exposure Chamber.

Amtech is also an engineering and technical services contractor for the Canadian Centre for Mine Action Technologies (CCMAT).  Amtech projects for CCMAT have included the development of a low-metal mechanical scanner for the evaluation of hand-held mine detectors and the development of mechanical mine surrogates for anti-personnel mines.  Established in 1998 as part of a Canadian government international initiative, CCMAT carries out research and development into low-cost, sustainable technologies for humanitarian de-mining.

Access to Test Facilities on the Suffield EPG

The Suffield EPG has traditionally been used by the Canadian Department of National Defence and by defence contractors to develop defence technologies and to test products.

The R&D, test and evaluation facilities at Suffield are world-class facilities that are commercially available.  Amtech offers a full range of project management, engineering and technical services to qualified organizations wishing to use the Suffield EPG including a full-service "turn-key" option.
