CBplus Chamber Design and Build

In September 2002, the CBplus CRTI project was announced (the CRTI program is part of Canada's counter-terrorism response).  Amtech is an industrial partner to Defence R&D Canada for the CBplus project with responsibility for the design of the Chamber Facility.  This facility will provide state-of-the-art capability to the Department of National Defence and to industry for the testing (using simulants) of individual protection equipment and clothes.

In September of 2003, Amtech was awarded the prime contract with the Department of National Defence for the design and build of the Chamber Facility.  Work on this facility is progressing on schedule.  Major milestones that have been achieved include the completion of the detailed design and the initiation of build activities in April 2004.  Ground breaking for the foundation of the facility was completed in August 2004, with the completion of integration and commissioning planned for completion in the late summer of 2005.

Support to Warfare Agent Disposal Project

Amtech is the principle subcontractor to an Ottawa-based consulting and professional services company for the review, compilation of data and historical validation of Chemical and Biological Warfare (CBW) activities in Canada in support of the Warfare Agent Disposal (WAD) Project.  Amtech's support for this work is required throughout the contract planned for completion in May 2005.

The work of the contract has resulted in the development of a comprehensive, unique database that organizes the extensive amount of information available from archival, document and subject matter expert sources into a searchable knowledge base.

Surrogate Mine Products

Amtech, working with the Canadian Centre for Mine Action Technologies and Defence R&D Canada, has developed a unique family of economical and realistic surrogate mine products.  These products have been designed for a variety of de-mining equipment evaluation and de-miner training applications and include surrogates for five anti-personnel mine types (the PMA-1, PMA-2, PMA-3, PMN and Type 72A).  The surrogates include a baseline model suitable for mechanical assistance / clearance equipment evaluation (referred to as the Mechanical Reproduction Mines or MRM's) as well as Signature Surrogates with a high degree of fidelity for mine detector evaluation, and Real-Time Training Surrogates that, once triggered, transmit an RF signal for instantaneous annunciation of a triggering event.

NightSun Searchlight Mount (Eurocopter AS350)

Amtech has developed a searchlight mount for the AS 350 helicopter.  Approved under Transport Canada STC SA02-40 and FAA STC SR01644NY, this proven mount is in use by operators in Canada, the United States, Japan, and Europe.  It is available for immediate delivery through our project partner  Meeker Aviation.

All Digital Oil Spill-on-Water Remote Sensing System

Amtech has developed an all-digital configuration of its Spill-on-water Remote Sensing System (SRSS) that is designed to locate and map oil spills on the surface of water under a broad range of operating scenarios. The suite of equipment, including infrared, ultraviolet and visible spectrum cameras, allows the operator to identify spill areas and to differentiate between thick and thin oil on the surface of water.

With partial funding from the Industrial Research Assistance Program (National Research Council of Canada), Amtech has also recently completed a series of field experiments that have demonstrated the feasibility of harbor surveillance with fixed-site cameras.  This work has resulted in extension of the proven SRSS technology to a ground-based harbor environmental monitoring system.

Certification Engineering and

Aeronautical Product News

In the summer of 2004, Amtech provided certification engineering support to a Canadian client for the certification of a novel Fire Suppression System on Bell 212 helicopters.  The complex certification program included structural testing of the tank assembly, structural and systems/equipment assessment of the tank assembly and helicopter modifications, and flight testing of the prototype installation at Salmon Arm, British Columbia.

In November 2003, Amtech was awarded a contract providing professional management, engineering and technical services to DRDC Suffield in the conduct of the Force Protection Against Enhanced Blast Technology Development Project (TDP).  This four year TDP is aimed at developing a knowledge base for the Canadian Forces that will provide decision making and design tools for the set-up and protection of field structures (such as observation posts) in hostile environments.

The work involves an extensive program of field experiments and data analysis.  Amtech's work to date has focused on the design and prototyping of a number of explosive test facilities and test structures simulating an urban environment, and support to a number of high priority field activities including the Northern Lights II trials.
